Loosey Goosey 🪿

Hi!

I didn't expect writing a self-introduction to make me anxious. Well, it's a little anxiety provoking but also kinda feel good to get started so... let's actually get started! I'm Por, a fourth year psychology student. It is my last term here and I'm hoping to make the most of it :) Oh yeah gotta say something about me. I was born and raised in Thailand, in a small town on the east coast and I have always been drawn to the ocean, though I think I’m terrified of the deep ocean that I can’t see anything in. I mean how do you know there is nothing lurking underwater…watching you. Anywayyyy, I moved here right before the pandemic and manage to convince my parents that it is okay for their daughter to be half way across the world. I love visiting home. The sun, the sea, the food. Ugh I miss the food. It is not impossible to find good thai food here but you gotta admit, no one makes food as good as your mom and your grandma. I may be talking about food right now because I have not had dinner hahah.

Let’s get back to RMST. I will admit that I signed up to this class based on recommendation and had little to no knowledge of what it entails. After the first lecture, I think I will enjoy the class. The first discussion class was the highlight of my day. I was not expecting to be discussing about what literature is (even though it is a literature class…). I also admire the effort Professor Jon put into learning our names from the get go. I have little experience with romance literatures other than my high school making us read Macbeth. It was a tough read because English is not my first language and at that point I was only 2 years into learning and speaking English. Oh and it did not help that Shakespeare English is not like English. The discussion about feeling stupid when reading romance literature makes my 14 year-old me feel seen and understood. I wish I could tell her that it is okay to not get it at first. I look forward to the discussions we will have for the rest of the term!

This first blog feels like an emotional rollercoaster of sorts haha. Hope y’alll had a great read and look forward to talk about Proust next week!

See you in class!

  1. Hi Por, and welcome to RMST 202! And I love the title you have used for this post. :) Oh, and the things we sometimes want to tell our fourteen-year-old selves! But they can sometimes still be with us, hidden under our more grown-up bluster. I'm all in favour of emotional rollercoasters!

One slight correction: as English is not a Romance language (even though it does have quite a lot of influence from Latin), Macbeth actually would not be considered an instance of Romance literature. Hence also all the books we are reading are in translation to English; none were originally written in English.

But otherwise, all your points stand! :)

  2. I really enjoyed reading this and the tittle for your blog is hilarious. The ocean part was so funny but also scary because you’re not wrong! I also really related to what you said about feeling stupid when reading Shakespeare, especially when English isn’t your first language. I’m glad you’re enjoying the class so far, and I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Proust next week.

  3. Hi Por! I like how silly and personal your blog was. I relate to you in the sense that I miss food from my home country, and I can't wait to go back in the summer. I agree that literature can be intimidatingly tough at first, but hopefully this course can broaden both our horizons and introduce us to many great pieces of literary works :)
