What is NOT wrong with Quimet????

I really didn't like Quimet lol. He did not make a good impression on me. I sensed that he was bad news from the get-go, and poor Natalia ended up being swept off her feet by him. It hurt my soul. The nickname was cute at first, but it became annoying when he basically said "this is who you are now" to her, and she just went along with it. He did not even ask for her name. He just went up to her and gave her a nickname. I don't think he even called her by her name once. He introduced her to everyone as Colometa. AND EVERYONE CALLED HERE THAT?????? If it were a cute lovey-dovey thing, he'd be the only person calling her Colometa. But I feel like this is him erasing her identity as Natalia cuz who she was does not matter to him, only who he wanted her to be does. He even said she'll have to agree with him in everything too.

Also, what's his problem with his mother's cooking? He had nothing good to say about any woman in his life. He dismissed the women's opinions and made Natalia feel as if she were not even there when he was talking to his friends. I'm glad Mateu sees Natalia as a person and not an extension of Quimet. And don't even get me started on the fact that he has anger issues and GASLIGHTS her into admitting that she met up with Pere when she didn't. He was gaslighting her so hard that she questioned whether she actually saw Pere. I will give him points during the war when he came back and spent time with the kids, since he had been away for a while. This left me wondering if he would ever change the way he shows affection to his family, stop slacking off, man up, and take care of his family like the traditional man he pretends to be, IF the war did not break out. I don't think he would, but Natalia seems to love him regardless. Yes, her life was a tragedy, and she almost ended it all with the funnel and the hydrochloric acid, but she was given a way out, and it saved her family. It was good to see people around her calling her by her name as well. It feels like after all she’s been through, Natalia is herself again. She may be a different than who she was at the beginning of the book but she is Natalia again.

  2. Thanks for this, but at just under 400 words, it is a little short... perhaps you could say something about the man with whom Natalia eventually ends up, Antoni. He, too, is far from perfect, not least as he has been disabled somehow in the war. But we obviously feel he is right for her in a way that Quimet is not. What does her acceptance of Antoni at the end show us about the way that Natalia may have changed in the meantime?

  3. I totally agree that Quimet is a pile of so many problems. The nickname he gave Natalia and the fact that he never called her by her actual name is straight up a major red flag. Also, his OBSESSIVE love over the birds were so concerning. Honestly it seemed like he loved the birds more than Natalia or the children. I also acknowledged his change during the war, but if it takes a war to change oneself I’m not sure if it’s worth.
