Hustling

Hi blogggggg

This book is written in a different manner than the previous books we have read so far (in a good way). It feels like a thriller book that keeps up on the edge of your seat. Quite a  page turner. The book was a refreshing read compared to the previous ones but it also came with a whole lot more violence and gruesome scenes. The deaths are more detailed compared to the previous book and there was so much blooooooood.

I enjoyed the relationship and the dynamic between the twins. How they physically and somewhat mentally contrast each other. How they claimed to be able to read each others minds. The respect of the chosen family between the two is a great representation of how you can find your people in this cruel and violent world. Yes, they picked they own path but that led them to each other.

The aspect of sexuality in this book reflected power and vulnerability. It is shown in the Crow’s relationship with the Girl. How she was so intrigued by the gang and got herself involved with a group of very dangerous criminals. The Kid was also discriminated against by the press and the police for being a homosexual that also showed interest in women. His sexual encounter with that girl towards the end of the story came as a surprise to me since he has not been portrayed as a straight man. The fluidity in sexuality was lightly explored.

The hallucination that Dorda was having was kinda cool but also very concerning hahah. He really should stop all the drugs and get some help. I think Dr. Bunge was kinda helping him through retelling or reliving the event of the robbery. But it seems Dorda has always heard the voices. He even does drugs to enhance the voices???  I mean its a cool way of making his mental illness work in his favour but still he is an interesting man.

Towards the end of the book, all I could think about was WHERE IN THE WORLD IS MALITO?????? He does not seem to be a man who would abandon his crew and he is teh gang’s leader. I don’t think he’s dead or captured by the police because if he were in police custody, they would have used that against the gang during the shoot out. At this point, all I wanna know is what happened to the man who started all this. And what would’ve happened if Bringnone didn't hook up with the girl????

  1. Perhaps the fact that he presents us with many elements, but not all the threads of the plot, is also a way for the author to control the narrative and give us a sense of realism in the novel. Piglia knows that a good story, to captivate us, can have a mystery to solve.
